Caregivers trained to help elderly
Of the 9 million Americans over the age of 65 who live alone, 2 million say they have no one to turn to if they need help. The lack of a caregiver, or someone who isn't properly trained, is a serious problem as Americans age.

Gladys Lavitan is 91 years old and still on the move, but these days, every now and then, she needs a little help.

“When you are weak and you are older, you just can't do what you did when you were young,” she said.

Caregivers are trained to properly help their clients and to keep themselves safe in the process. That's where trained caregivers like Keisha step in. At Partners In Care in Charlotte, the goal is to teach caregivers how to assist seniors safely. The 140 caregivers there use a mock hospital three to four times a day to make sure they are trained to take care of their clients and themselves.

“They can hurt themselves as quickly as they can hurt a client so it really is a combination of both,” said Partners In Care owner Don Olin.

Olin says the mock hospital is sometimes used to do medication reminders for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. Other times it is used to teach the correct way to move someone from one position to another, like from the bed to a wheelchair or a walker, or for bathing.

One out of every three of seniors who live independently will experience a major fall this year. Gladys doesn't want to be one of them.

“I fear it,” she said. “I have a terrible fear of falling and I never used to because I used to be able to jump up again.”

But now Keisha is there to help her and teaching Gladys to help herself.

A nationwide toll-free hotline also provides information about assistance for older individuals anywhere in the nation. It's sponsored by the Health and Human Services Department. The number to call is 1-800-677-1116.
